Tony

Anthony Romano
You never think it could happen to you.  One day, 25 years old, fit and seemingly healthy, Tony Romano ran in the Bay to Breaks race.  Two days later, he sought medical attention for what he thought was very minor sores in his mouth.  That day, he was admitted to UCSF, diagnosed with leukemia (AML) and began treatment for his life threatening symptoms.  He didn’t leave the hospital for thirty-two days, as he immediately started the grueling coarse of treatment for leukemia.

Tony fought leukemia for five years. He was adamant that his life not be defined by leukemia.  Tony maintained his tenacious spirit, sense of humor, and positive outlook on his future. Through his fight, he was so humble, he didn’t complain or seek sympathy.  However, it is impossible to describe Tony’s irrepressible strength of character without acknowledging the depths of emotional and physical suffering he endured as a leukemia patient.  Tony benefitted from the best doctors, the best medical care, the best courses of treatments available, and he was young and resilient.  His leukemia story took many turns; there were cautious celebrations and devastating setbacks.  Through it all Tony, his family and friends, never doubted he would get his happy ending.

You never think it could happen to you.  In July of 2005, Tony was sent home from the hospital to close his life surrounded by friends and family.  Five years later, it is still surreal that someone as alive and vibrant as Tony would lose his life to leukemia.  But, it can happen to you and your family.  If it does, you pin all your hope on the best research; the best treatments, the best doctors and the best medical care and pray for a happy ending.
